Lian Tan

Lian Tan is located at the northern end of Baihe District, Tainan City, and is the original birthplace of Baihe lotuses. To its north, it faces Bazhang River and Shuishang Township in Chiayi County, covering an area of 3.62 square kilometers. The earliest origin of lotuses in the Baihe area was in the vicinity of Lian Tan and Guangan. Lian Tan's lotus production scale is very large, particularly in the 'Forty-nine Tufts Northeast' and Lian Tan Tianyang regions, where lotus fields crisscross, creating a spectacular sight. The plain, interspersed with scattered mounds, features many marshes, ponds, and sticky soil, making it a blessed land for lotus growth. Therefore, this settlement was named 'Lian Tan' (Lotus Pond) after the scenery of 'lotuses growing in the pond,' and it is one of the four settlements of the Lian Tan community. Because of its name, it has long been known as the 'Land of Lotuses.' Later, due to administrative redistricting and renaming, 'Lian Tan' changed from the name of a settlement to the name of a village (Li), making it the only place name in Baihe District associated with 'lotus.' The Lian Tan community is a typical rural community, with several small hills interspersed within its green plains. Residents have lived here for generations, engaging in farming, and are known for their simple, diligent, and thrifty customs. Lotus seeds are the primary agricultural product. Due to varying planting times, beautiful lotuses can be admired from April to October. This unique scene of harvesting lotuses and every household hulling lotus seeds in summer, and digging up lotus roots and every household drying lotus root starch in winter, is a true reflection of the community residents' lifestyle.
