Taikang Green Tunnel

Yishi Road, which runs from in front of Liuying Chi Mei Hospital towards Taikang and Guoyihou, is lined with dense, towering mango trees, extending for approximately 4.5 kilometers like a tunnel. Each tree is over 50 years old. During the Japanese colonial period, this tree-lined avenue was known as the 'Military Road.' Legend has it that at the time, fearing Allied bombing raids, the Japanese military mandated that every household plant five trees along the roadside, which accounts for the total of over 700 trees present today. Later, to commemorate the visit of anti-communist fighters returning from the Korean War, the road was specially named 'Yishi Road' (義士路, meaning 'Heroes' Road). The lush green canopy, with golden, dazzling sunlight filtering through the leaves, creates different aesthetic qualities of light and shadow in the morning, at noon, or at dusk. For locals, picking wild mangoes along this road and taking them home to eat as children is a shared memory of this rural pathway.
