Wanxuanju was built by Zhang Shixi (1802-1872), whose courtesy name was Wanchun. He was a Hakka whose ancestral home was Dapu County, Chaozhou Prefecture, Guangdong Province. His ancestor who migrated to Taiwan, Zhang Dajing (1690-1773), along with his land reclamation association "Zhang Zhenwan," played a significant role in the Han Chinese settlement of the central region. Zhang Shixi began the construction of Wanxuanju in the 10th year of Tongzhi (1871). Following his death the next year, his four sons took over and continued the construction, which was officially completed in the 12th year of Tongzhi (1873).
