Pitan Weir

Pitan Weir is an important hydraulic engineering structure located in the middle and upper reaches of the Xindian River. The first iteration of Pitan Weir was constructed in the 18th century as part of the Liugong Canal, a crucial hydraulic engineering project during the Qing Dynasty for what is now Taipei and New Taipei. This weir also contributed to the picturesque lake and mountain scenery of the upstream Bitan Scenic Area. In 2015, Pitan Weir was severely damaged by Typhoon Soudelor. In response, the New Taipei City Government Water Resources Department launched the 'Pitan Weir Improvement and Surrounding Environment Creation Project' to renovate the damaged weir. As part of this project, the Pitan Fishway was constructed on the right bank of the weir, enabling migratory aquatic organisms in the Xindian River to swim upstream to their habitats in the upper reaches.
