Houtong was once Taiwan's leading coal-producing region. During its heyday, thousands of miners worked tirelessly here, supporting their families and driving national economic development. This period, deeply reliant on coal mining, was undoubtedly Houtong's most significant past. To preserve the historical memory of Taiwan's coal mining industry, retired miners, relying on their own efforts, established the Houtong Miner's Culture and History Museum in 2019 at the original Ruisan Main Mine Office. Featuring a miner's silhouette as its emblem, the museum guides visitors back to Houtong's "black gold" era.
