The Jingtong Ancient Trail was established at least over a hundred years ago. Its origins trace back to the Qing Dynasty, when residents from Shuifanjiao (today's Xizhi) crossed mountains and trekked through forests to clear land and settle in Jingtongkeng. As residents traveled between Pingxi and Xizhi, using carrying poles to transport various goods, they gradually forged this mountain path. During the Japanese colonial period, coal mining in the Pingxi area led to a large influx of people, transforming Pingxi into a major mining town. Although the Pingxi Railway was subsequently built, primarily for coal transportation, the Jingtong Ancient Trail remained a vital transportation route to Xizhi.
