Yanliao Anti-Japanese Monument

The Yanliao Anti-Japanese Monument is located within Yanliao Beach Park. After the First Sino-Japanese War, the Qing Dynasty and the Empire of Japan signed the Treaty of Shimonoseki, ceding Taiwan to Japan. Taiwanese soldiers and civilians organized the Republic of Formosa to resist the Japanese army. On May 29, 1895, Imperial Prince Kitashirakawa Yoshihisa of Japan led a large army of the Imperial Guards Division to land at Aodi, officially starting the Yiwei War. In June, Taipei surrendered, and Taiwan became a colony of the Japanese Empire, thus beginning the 50-year period of Japanese rule. The Japanese army had erected a landing monument at their landing site in Yanliao. After Taiwan's retrocession, the township office abolished the original monument and rebuilt it as an anti-Japanese monument to commemorate the heroic spirit of the anti-Japanese martyrs.
