Houtong, famous for its adorable resident cats, was once a significant hub for Taiwan's coal mining industry, thanks to its rich coal deposits that attracted many to extract the "black gold." Its glorious past has shaped its present cultural heritage. To this day, Houtong preserves a wealth of mining heritage sites, including mine shafts, rail carts, coal transportation bridges, miners' dormitories, and the Ruishan Coal Mine Company. Visitors can even ride a rail cart through a coal transportation tunnel, offering a unique and unforgettable glimpse into the hardships faced by miners.
