Douglas Trading Company

In early years, the Tamsui River was deep enough for large ships to dock, making it a very important port area after Tamsui opened as a treaty port. Douglas Trading Company was one of Tamsui's top five foreign trading companies at the time (along with Tait & Co., Jardine Matheson, E. D. Sassoon & Co., Douglas, and Butterfield & Swire). Notably, in addition to the general trading functions of foreign firms, shipping was its primary business, and it monopolized Taiwan's shipping routes for as long as thirty years. It not only witnessed the prosperous development of Tamsui after its port opened, but also played a role in history, as Dr. George Leslie Mackay, upon his arrival in Taiwan, sailed on the 'Hailong (Sea Dragon)' steamer, operated by Douglas Trading Company. Since 2023, it has served as an exhibition venue for the Tamsui Historic Sites Micro-Museum.
