The Houtong Cat Bridge was originally an overpass built by Taiwan Railways (TRA) at Houtong Railway Station in 1970, providing access for residents of the Chetou-ding settlement in Guangfu Village. Since Houtong gained fame as the "Cat Village" in 2009, a continuous stream of tourists has visited, relying on this station overpass to travel between the Cat Village and the Coal Mine Park. As residents voiced concerns that the overpass was old and narrow, the New Taipei City Government decided to rebuild it.
