Houtong (also known as Houdong) was originally named Houdong (猴洞). During the late Qing Qianlong era, few residents had settled here, and many caves in the mountains were home to monkey colonies. Over time, Houdong became the name of the area. On January 27, 1920 (Taisho 9), the Ruifang-Houdong railway section began operations. On April 1, 1962 (Republic of China Year 51), the station name was changed to Houtong.
