International End-of-War Peace Memorial Park

The International End-of-War Peace Memorial Park was originally the Jinguashi Prisoner-of-War Camp of the Japanese military between 1942 and 1945. In Taiwanese, it was called 'Dok-phī-á-liâu,' which originally meant 'barracks for high-nosed foreigners' (referring to Westerners). At that time, the camp held over a thousand World War II prisoners of war from Allied nations, including Britain, Canada, the Netherlands, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, and the United States. During their imprisonment, these Allied POWs were forced to mine copper. Due to the harsh living and working conditions at the time, strict management, insufficient medical supplies, and an inability to adapt to the local environment, many prisoners of war tragically died here. The site seems to still echo the lingering suffering of the prisoners of war, yet it also profoundly emphasizes the vital importance of peace to the world.
