During the peak period of Houtong's mining industry, a large number of mining families relocated here. These miner's dormitories were also known as 'liao-zai' (simple dwellings). In Houtong, various 'liao-zai' existed, such as 'Nei Liao-zai', 'San Zuo Liao', 'Wu Zuo Liao', 'Fan Zai Liao', and 'Mei Yuan Cuo', all serving as workers' quarters. In the early days, most units were separated by wooden partitions, and a small hole in the wooden wall held a light bulb to serve two households. Kitchens, bathrooms, and toilets were also shared facilities.
