Old Caoling Tunnel

The Old Caoling Tunnel spans between Fulong in New Taipei City and Shicheng in Yilan. It was a crucial engineering project for the Taiwan Railway Administration's Yilan Line. When it opened in 1924, it was Southeast Asia's longest railway tunnel, measuring 2,167 meters, and bore the heavy responsibility of connecting Taipei and Yilan. At its northern and southern entrances, the calligraphic works "Where White Clouds Fly" and "Conquering Heavenly Barriers" are inscribed, commemorating the arduous construction back then. The Old Caoling Tunnel was decommissioned after the Taiwan Railway Administration's double-tracking and electrification, and it reopened in 2008 as a bicycle path.
