Wulai District tourism is renowned for its hot springs and mountain cherry blossoms. Wulai is also Taiwan's northernmost indigenous mountain area, with residents primarily belonging to the Atayal tribe. The place name 'Wulai' is derived from the Atayal word 'Ulay,' meaning 'the water is very hot, be careful' ('Kiluh-ulay'). The Atayal indigenous people of Wulai District were once called 'Ququ Fan' during the Qing Dynasty and Japanese colonial periods.
