Tamsui Climate Observatory

The Tamsui Climate Observatory, planned for construction in 1937 and officially opened in 1941, was one of the important observation stations in northern Taiwan during the Japanese colonial period. It was then known as the "Tamsui Branch Office" and has faithfully recorded climate changes in the Tamsui area over the years. Located above the Bizaotou Seaplane Base, it was originally an aviation meteorological observatory assigned to the Tamsui Seaplane Base during the Japanese colonial era. Besides observing the weather, it also monitored coastal tidal changes. Currently under the jurisdiction of meteorological agencies, it serves as a key reference point. Every winter, when cold fronts from the north move south, the lowest temperature data for northern Taiwan reported in weather forecasts actually originates from this Tamsui Climate Observatory. It is now a city-designated historic monument.
