Tamsui Customs Wharf Park

The Customs Wharf, located on Zhongzheng Road, was once a critically important port in Taiwan during the Qing Dynasty. Following the Treaty of Tianjin in 1858 (the 8th year of Xianfeng) and the Convention of Peking in 1860 (the 10th year of Xianfeng), it held a pivotal position in trade history. At that time, the port authority's wharf and the British consulate's boathouse were established here. Later, the Chinese government officially invited the Briton Horatio N. Lay (Li Taiguo) to serve as the 'Inspector General of Customs,' transferring customs management to foreigners. This serves as important historical evidence of the great powers' encroachment upon Northern Taiwan during the late Qing Dynasty.
