Missionary George Leslie MacKay, widely known to us as Dr. Mackay, arrived in Tamsui in 1872. From then on, he actively dedicated himself to missionary work, medical services, and educational activities, earning the respect and affection of the local residents. On June 2, 1901, he passed away from throat cancer in Tamsui and was buried in the land of Tamsui that he deeply loved. Mackay Cemetery is located in a corner of Tamkang High School. Originally, it was the Tamsui Foreigners' Cemetery, but according to his will, a wall was built to separate his grave from those of other foreigners, symbolizing Mackay's identity as a Taiwanese.
