Tamsui Fuyou Temple

Fuyou Temple, situated on Zhongzheng Road Old Street in Tamsui District, New Taipei City, has an actual construction history that is no longer verifiable. Some accounts suggest it was originally established during the Yongzheng Emperor's reign and rebuilt in 1796 (the first year of the Jiaqing Emperor's reign). However, it is certain that Fuyou Temple boasts a history of over 200 years, is classified as a third-grade historical monument, and stands as one of the oldest among Tamsui's four major temples. The temple primarily enshrines Mazu, and is also known as Mazu Temple. Because it did not receive an imperial title, it retained its original name instead of being called Tianhou Temple, and it served as the hub of development for the old Tamsui street. One line from the couplets in front of the temple, "In the boundless sea of suffering, who can reach the other shore from Meizhou?", vividly illustrates the arduous journey of our ancestors in settling Taiwan and highlights Mazu's crucial role in protecting the people and calming the seas.
