Haishan Shrine Ruins

Haishan Shrine was completed on May 13, Showa 13 (1938). At that time, it was the late period of Japanese rule, shortly after the Marco Polo Bridge Incident, and Japan had entered a wartime phase. Religious control over Taiwan reached its peak, and the Kominka Movement was actively promoted in Taiwan. The entire island was mobilized to support the war and respond to the times. Consequently, Taiwanese people were compelled to worship at shrines. Concurrently, the policy of 'one shrine per street-village' was adopted to strengthen overall control over Taiwan.
