Tiger Tablet

The Tiger Tablet is located at the windy pass on the border between Taipei and Yilan counties along the Caoling Historic Trail, at an elevation of approximately 330 meters. It was erected by Liu Ming-deng, the General Commander of Taiwan Garrison. The site where the tablet stands is notorious for strong winds year-round, which harass travelers passing through. Therefore, Liu Ming-deng inscribed the character '虎' (hǔ, tiger) here, intending to invoke the saying 'Clouds follow the dragon, wind follows the tiger' (雲從龍，風從虎), to mitigate the wind damage. The ancients erected this tablet to ward off evil, which also serves as a reminder to travelers that this area is prone to strong winds, and they should exercise particular caution when passing through.
