The Shulin area was a thriving coal mining region in its early days, and many mine pit ruins still remain today. The Gaishankeng mine, with a history spanning a century, boasted the highest coal output among all mines in Shanjia at that time. After the Japanese took control of Taiwan, they also recognized the rich mineral resources, leading to the construction of the current Shanjia Station as a dedicated coal transport station. The mine was finally sealed in 1959.
