Xinzhuang means 'new settlement' or 'newly developed town'. Xinzhuang Temple Street, which emerged in the late Kangxi Emperor's reign during the Qing Dynasty, now boasts over three hundred years of history. Xinzhuang was the earliest town in the Taipei Basin. Benefiting from the convenient shipping system of the Tamsui River basin, Xinzhuang earned the reputation during the Qing Dynasty of 'a thousand sails filling Xinzhuang Port, and markets bustling with a thousand lights,' and it once became the third largest prosperous city in all of Taiwan. Immigrants from various regions came to Xinzhuang to make a living, bringing with them their hometown faiths. This also made Xinzhuang the area with the highest concentration of century-old temples among New Taipei's many old streets, hence it is known as Xinzhuang Temple Street.
