Big Head Drum Pavilion

A new type of musical ensemble was formed using a large drum, a pair of cymbals, and a suona. The "Drum Pavilion Formation" (鼓亭陣) was created to facilitate movement along rural field paths. The wooden carved drum pavilions commonly seen today are an improved form developed from this original concept. On the day of the parade on February 28, 1947, the participation of the Chen Cai Drum Pavilion Troupe attracted many people to join the protest procession, making it arguably the most important propaganda tool at the time.
