Completed in August 1889 by Liu Ming-chuan, the first Governor of Taiwan, it connected Sanchongpu (now Sanchong District) with Dadaocheng Wharf in Taipei. In 1895, the bridge was named Tamsui Bridge and was an important transit port in the Dalongdong and Dadaocheng areas at that time. On February 27, 1947, the Taimao Tea House Incident (a raid on smuggled cigarettes) occurred, and the protest march that took place the next day, February 28, began its assembly and departure from the current Taipei Bridge entrance.
