Taiwan Dadaocheng Presbyterian Church

The Taiwan Dadaocheng Presbyterian Church was donated and built by Mr. Li Chun-sheng, an important figure in modern Taiwanese history. The church is located in the old district of Dadaocheng. The main architectural style is reportedly inspired by Mr. Li Chun-sheng's reference to churches built by Western missionaries in the Fuzhou-Xiamen area of Fujian, aiming to propagate religious doctrines with an elegant and refined character. It primarily uses reinforced brick construction as its main structure, built with high-quality fair-faced red bricks from the early Taisho period, showcasing excellent construction quality. Its facade is adorned with artistic decorations featuring both Chinese and Western characteristics. Due to the conservative social customs of the time, men and women sat separately in the worship hall and entered through separate left and right entrances. These features bear witness to the development of Christianity in the Taipei area from the late 19th to the early 20th century. Although the architectural style of this historic monument imitates Western church designs, its washed stone facade decorations still exhibit traditional Taiwanese patterns, blending Chinese and Western styles. The building's scale is both solemn and approachable, possessing its own unique characteristics. It is truly rare in modern Taiwanese architecture, highly praised by the heritage community, and designated as Taipei City's 100th historic site. Hidden inside the church is a 'musical clock' composed of 25 bells of various sizes. Every day at 12 PM, the musical chimes play at a fixed time, with 7 different melodies played in rotation.
