Monga Qingshan Temple

General Zhang Gun, a general under Sun Quan during the Three Kingdoms period, achieved great success governing the Huian region of Quanzhou. After his death, locals established Qingshan Temple to venerate him. Zhang Gun is respectfully known as Qingshan Wang (King of the Green Mountain) or Ling'an Zunwang (Revered King of Spiritual Peace). Qingshan Wang has always been believed to possess the power to eliminate plagues, oversee justice, and mete out rewards for good deeds and punishments for evil. Among the deities worshipped alongside him are the Eight Judges, General Jia (Manacles), and General Suo (Chains). Monga Qingshan Temple boasts over a century of history. It is a three-hall temple constructed with a blend of wood and stone, having undergone multiple exquisite renovations. Notable features include its impressive octagonal caisson ceiling. The materials used in its renovations often carry historical significance; for example, the stone pillars and parapets in the front hall were sourced from leftover materials of the Yuanshan Shrine. Furthermore, the statue of Qingshan Wang has piercing eyes, and observing it from different angles evokes different feelings. Visitors are encouraged to experience this in person. The 23rd day of the 10th lunar month each year marks Qingshan Wang's birthday. Legend has it that two days prior, Qingshan Wang leads his retinue to patrol the streets and alleys of the Monga area, ensuring the peace and safety of its residents. On the 22nd, a vibrant nighttime palanquin procession for Qingshan Wang takes place, featuring numerous performances such as Bajiajiang (Eight Generals), drum arrays, and bands. Every household along the route sets up incense altars and offerings on the roadside. This event, known as the 'Monga Grand Worship,' is considered one of Taipei City's three major temple festivals, alongside the Dihua Street Xiahai City God Temple and the Baosheng Dadi (God of Medicine) processions.
