Spanish All Saints Church Archaeological Site

※Closed due to ongoing construction.※ The archaeological site of the monastery at the Pingyilu Parking Lot on Heping Island, Keelung City, has yielded astonishingly rich results from its excavations, representing one of Taiwan's most significant historical discoveries in recent years. Commissioned by the Keelung City Cultural Affairs Bureau, the Tsing Hua University archaeological team continued the excavation project in 2019, gradually revealing the full scope of the All Saints Church. From the foundations visible at the site, including the remains of the church's nave, main structure, and buttresses, it is estimated that the interior area of the church exceeds 200 square meters, with a total footprint exceeding 350 square meters. According to Dutch historical records, when the Dutch defeated the Spanish forces, over 400 Spanish captives on the island were imprisoned in the church, which suggests its impressive scale. In addition to human remains, artifacts unearthed at the site include European buckles, Chinese trade porcelain, blue-and-white cups, Anping pots, and more. Furthermore, the site's history extends beyond the Dutch and Spanish periods, encompassing cultural layers from the Iron Age (400 to 2000 years ago) and even a Yuanshan culture layer dating back over 3000 years.
