- Attraction Features - Nuandong Gorge is a hidden gem that combines natural beauty with historical and cultural significance. It marks the first mountain trail section of the Tamsui-Kavalan Central Route, starting from Nuannuan. The trail begins at the parking lot, follows the Dongshikeng Stream upstream, passes by Dajing Leisure Farm, and ends at the entrance of the old Nuandong Trail. The total length is approximately 2.2 kilometers. Along the way, the numerous Tudigong (Earth God) shrines serve as the best testament to the faith of early settlers. Nuandong Gorge preserves its natural ecological landscape, featuring unique cascading waterfalls that exude a raw beauty and the power of water. The gorge's terrain is magnificent, offering scenic spots along the trails for visitors to rest and admire. The park features both large and small loop trails: one extending along the stream, and the other winding along the cliffs. There are also observation pavilions within the park where visitors can enjoy views of the waterfalls and the gorge. In 2014, Keelung City's Nuandong Gorge was designated an International Friendship Trail with the Tome Route of Japan's Miyagi Olle Trail. - Recommended Activities - If you're looking to explore Keelung's natural landscapes and historical/cultural attractions, Nuandong Gorge is an excellent choice. Follow the trail deeper to experience the former Tamsui-Kavalan Trail and the footsteps of the past. Enter the gorge to admire the unique cascading waterfalls, feel the power and tranquility of nature, and enjoy the embrace of the mountains and forests. You can even wade in the clear, cool stream. Remember to apply sunscreen, wear suitable hiking shoes, and embark on a brisk walk to experience the pristine beauty of Nuandong Gorge! - Nearby Recommendations - When planning your trip to Nuandong Gorge, it's recommended to include Lapopo Village and Dajing Leisure Farm. If you have enough time, consider camping overnight at Lapopo Village to immerse yourself in the tranquil nightscape of the mountains. At Dajing Leisure Farm, you can experience unique indigo dyeing craft activities. Both attractions offer guided tours and explanations, allowing you to gain a deeper understanding of the local nature and culture, embarking on a relaxing yet educational journey. - Introduction to Tamsui-Kavalan Trail - The Tamsui-Kavalan Trail, also known as the Tamsui-Kavalan Centenary Mountain Path, embodies the resilient traces of early settlers, including Indigenous hunting, coastal travel, migration, and trade. During the Qing Dynasty, it was the primary route between "Tamsui Prefecture" in the north and "Kavalan Prefecture" in the east. It is broadly divided into three major networks: North, Central, and South. Keelung's Nuannuan serves as the starting point for both the Northern and Central Tamsui-Kavalan Routes. To honor the spirit of the original cultural pathways, by compiling literature, maps, interview information, and considering historical, cultural, and geological landscapes, recreational systems, and safety, a systematic network of Tamsui-Kavalan mountain trails has been planned today, reviving this long-standing centenary trail.
