Sheliao East Battery

Attraction Introduction: Sheliao (also known as Dajilongyu, Sheliao Island, or Heping Island) was originally an independent, secure island inhabited by the Ketagalan Basai subgroup's Dajilong community. In 1626, it became the administrative center for the Spanish Governor-General in northern Taiwan. After undergoing multiple destructions and reconstructions, it became an important military stronghold guarding Keelung Harbor during the Qing dynasty after 1884. In 1886, Liu Mingchuan rebuilt the Sheliao Battery, which was later renovated by the Japanese into the East and West Batteries. Attraction Features: Sheliao, known today as Heping Island, saw its first fortifications built by the Spanish Governor-General in 1626. One of the main battery positions is the current Sheliao West Battery. After 1642, the Sheliao area was successively occupied by the Dutch, the Zheng family, and the Qing dynasty. On the eve of the Sino-French War, Liu Mingchuan once again established batteries here. However, the war broke out before the batteries were completed. The Sheliao Battery was rebuilt in 1886. During the Japanese colonial period, in 1907, the Japanese government renovated the Sheliao Battery, dividing it into the East and West Batteries. Currently, only facilities such as a reservoir, command post, machine gun bunker, observation post, and ammunition depot remain. The battery utilized valleys and depressions in the terrain to conceal its barracks, offering high levels of camouflage. Recommended Activities: Take a leisurely stroll along the Sheliao East Battery trail and step into the embrace of history. From Sheliao East Battery, you can see Bitou Cape to the east, Yehliu Cape to the west, and even distant Keelung Islet ahead, while Heping Island Park lies beneath your feet. Every step is a dialogue with nature and history.
