On January 27, 1949, the 'Taiping Steamer,' carrying nearly a thousand people, departed from Shanghai for Keelung. For these passengers, Taiwan was 'the other shore of refuge.' Tragically, it collided with a cargo ship en route and sank, becoming a major tragedy in Taiwan's immigration history. To commemorate this major maritime disaster, future generations erected a memorial. Its inscription, facing the sea, also expresses hopes for peace and the future. Today, the '1949 Taiping Steamer Memorial Park' is located within the Shawawan Historic and Cultural Park, serving as a place to reflect on the joys and sorrows of that era. Next to Dashanwan Beach, visitors can admire the inscription on the 'Taiping Steamer Disaster Victims Memorial,' which was penned by Mr. Yu You-ren. This inscription expresses remembrance for loved ones who never reached shore and invokes their spirits. The coral sand and gravel plaza and pathways in front of the monument symbolize the ship's journey between sea and land. The memorial was originally located within a military base, requiring prior application for entry. After the park opened to the public in 2018, families' remembrance was no longer restricted, and this tragic story from a great era is now understood and passed on by more people. The annual commemorative event held on the eve of the disaster not only mourns and remembers the deceased but also serves as an opportunity to collectively confront historical memory and cherish the freedom and democracy of Taiwan. Even if you're not interested in history, the Taiping Steamer Memorial Park offers a place to calm your mind and enjoy natural tranquility. For those who enjoy studying history, the park provides an opportunity to read about and feel the stories of the joys and sorrows of a bygone era. When visiting the Taiping Steamer Memorial Park, be sure to also explore the Shawawan Historic and Cultural Park and the Sino-French War Memorial Park for a short trip tracing history.
