Fenglin Tobacco Barns

During the Japanese colonial period, people were encouraged to cultivate and process tobacco. Coupled with the government's economic development policies for eastern Taiwan in the 1960s, the area of tobacco cultivation in Hakka villages significantly increased, promoting the development of the tobacco processing industry and forming the most densely populated cluster of tobacco barns in Taiwan. The tobacco barns in Fenglin are of the Osaka style, characterized by smoke vents protruding from the roof, which facilitates smoke exhaust. Currently, there are approximately 33 well-preserved tobacco barns, blending Japanese architectural features with Hakka cultural charm. Visitors are encouraged to slow down and gain a deeper understanding of the prosperity of these tobacco barns in their heyday.
