Hualien Tourist Sugar Factory

This sugar factory, now a hub for tourism and leisure development in central Hualien, preserves rows of neat Japanese-style bungalows from the Japanese colonial period. Built during that era, it boasts over a hundred years of history. Its diverse traditional architectural forms and elegant designs make it the largest surviving cluster of Japanese wooden structures in Taiwan. Of course, a visit to the sugar factory is also an excellent opportunity to learn how the common white sugar we see everywhere in daily life is made, and what the differences are between granulated sugar, rock sugar, brown sugar, and dark brown sugar. Although it no longer produces sugarcane on a large scale, Hualien Sugar Factory transformed into a tourist sugar factory in 2002. It is developing into a park with functions encompassing tourism, leisure, education, culture, and experiential activities. The future development of the factory area will be positioned as a "Sugar Industry Cultural and Creative Recreational Park," not only serving as a historical witness but also becoming a significant attraction for promoting tourism in Hualien. Transportation: ● Public Transportation 1. Take the Taiwan Railways Eastern Line train and alight at Hualien Guangfu Station, then walk for about 10 minutes to reach the factory. The hotel offers a free shuttle service between Guangfu Station and the hotel; please call in advance (03-8705881). 2. Take Taiwan Tourist Shuttle (Hualien Valley Line) - Route 303 (low-floor bus) - and alight at Hualien Tourist Sugar Factory Station. ● By Car Drive on Provincial Highway 9, turn east at the 7-11 store at the 251.5K mark to enter the park.
