Tropic of Cancer Marker

The Tropic of Cancer traverses Chiayi County and Hualien County in Taiwan. To commemorate its passage, monuments have been erected. There are a total of three such marker towers on Taiwan Island, located respectively in Shuishang Township, Chiayi County; Ruisui Township, Hualien County; and Fengbin Township, Hualien County. The Tropic of Cancer marker in Wuhe Village, Ruisui Township, Hualien, features an elegant white octagonal design. The surrounding area is planted with flowers and trees and has been developed into a small park, making it a must-visit spot for tourists coming to Ruisui. Within the Tropic of Cancer Marker Park, there is a white sundial-shaped monument, surrounded by four traditional Chinese celestial animals used to observe astrological phenomena: the Azure Dragon of the East, the White Tiger of the West, the Vermilion Bird of the South, and the Black Tortoise of the North, collectively known as the 'Four Symbols'. Each symbol contains seven constellations, representing the celestial changes of the four seasons: spring, summer, autumn, and winter. Additionally, in the wooden corridors on both sides of the park, there are numerous interpretive panels related to celestial phenomena, climate, solar terms, and earth science, making the Tropic of Cancer Marker Park an educational and recreational attraction.
