Visitor Essentials

Taiwan is home to three Tropic of Cancer monuments. While one is located in Shuishang Township, Chiayi, the other two are in Hualien: one at Wuhe Terrace and another in Fengbin Township, specifically at Jingpu (70.5 km mark on Provincial Highway 11). This pristine white landmark in Fengbin offers beautiful views of the Coastal Mountain Range and the Pacific Ocean, making it a popular spot for visitors to photograph and relax. The Tropic of Cancer, located at 23.5° North latitude, signifies the divide between tropical and subtropical climate zones. In Taiwan, this geographical line distinctly influences agriculture: tropical crops like pineapples and sugar apples are predominantly grown south of the line, whereas subtropical crops such as tea and rice thrive to the north. A unique feature of the monument is a slender slit. At noon on the summer solstice, sunlight directly passes through this slit, allowing visitors to experience the intriguing phenomenon of standing without a shadow. Beyond taking memorable photos, visitors are encouraged to read the explanatory plaques to understand the profound relationship between the latitude and the changing seasons. Transportation: ● Public Transport: Take Hualien Bus (Coastal Route via Provincial Highway 11) services 1127, 1140, or 1145 and alight at Jingpu Station. Then walk approximately 500 meters. ● By Car: Address: 70.5 km mark of Provincial Highway 11, Fengbin Township, Hualien County.
