It is considered a sacred place by the indigenous people of the Gangkou Tribe. Inside the cave, spring water has accumulated to form a lake about 5 meters deep. The water level in this lake remarkably fluctuates with the waxing and waning of the moon, which is why it is named 'Moon Cave' and also known as 'Moon Well' or 'Moon's Well'. Local Amis tribe legends attribute this tidal phenomenon to the moon's phases. Legend also has it that the lake is home to many eels, including a giant eel weighing over 10 kilograms, believed to be a 'thousand-year-old eel'. Please note: The area is currently under construction, with an estimated reopening in mid-April, Year 110 (2021). The actual reopening date is subject to construction progress. The recreational area, situated about 1 kilometer south of Shitiping, offers an observation deck adorned with charming fish wood carvings and is an excellent spot to enjoy beautiful sea views. Moon Cave is a naturally formed enclosed rock cave where the lack of visible inlets or outlets, combined with its tidal phenomena, makes it quite a spectacle. Visitors can take a small boat, operated by a guide, to explore the stunning stalactite formations. With the aid of flashlights, the guide will pole the boat and explain in detail the cave's formation and its unique ecosystem. Various animals inhabit the cave ceiling, including Formosan Leaf-nosed Bats, Bent-winged Bats, and Formosan Lesser Horseshoe Bats. Under the flashlight's beam, these bats flit around as if playing hide-and-seek with visitors, further enhancing the cave's mysterious atmosphere.
