Xinshe Terraced Fields

The well-known "Sea Terraces" are precisely the Xinshe Terraced Fields. Regardless of whether it's during planting, before harvesting, or after the fallow period, in any month or season, you can experience the diverse beauty of the Sea Terraces! The scene before harvest is most people's favorite: plump rice grains basking in the sun, swaying with the sea breeze. Walking between the field ridges, looking at the distant Coastal Mountain Range and the Pacific Ocean, one feels as if becoming one with the scenery, reluctant to leave. The Kavalan people, who migrated south from Yilan, built a new settlement in Fengbin Township, Hualien, hence the village was named Xinshe. In the Kavalan language, Xinshe means 'the place for nourishing all life'. The residents, accustomed to farming in Yilan, still longed for the taste of rice. Thus, they opened up terraced fields on the coastal plateau and planted rice, creating the unique sight of rice fields connecting to the sea, also known as 'Sea Rice Terraces'. Harvested once a year, the Xinshe Sea Terraces are Taiwan's largest forest-adjacent sea terraced fields. The terraced fields are backed by the Coastal Mountain Range and adjoin the coast. Looking towards the horizon, they can be seen advancing towards the sea in a jagged pattern. A wooden boardwalk has been built at one end of the rice fields, allowing visitors to stroll along and enjoy the scenery.
