Seventy-Seven Heights

Seventy-Seven Heights, a former military stronghold, is a seldom-visited spot. Though not high in elevation, it boasts breathtaking scenery, offering a 360-degree panoramic view of mountains, sea, and the city below. Named for its 77-meter altitude, it was once a restricted military zone. Along the path, you'll encounter bunkers and remnants of abandoned military walls, adding a sense of adventure. However, accompanied by birdsong, fragrant flowers, and the sound of ocean waves, the walk is quite relaxed and pleasant. Here, you can witness the estuary of the Hualien River, where its waters dramatically merge with the Pacific Ocean – a phenomenon that inspired Hualien's old name, 'Huilan' (meaning 'whirling ripples'). From this vantage point, you can also gaze at the beginning of the Coastal Mountain Range, Hualien, and Ji'an cityscapes, with boundless mountain and sea vistas that uplift the spirits of those who ascend. During summer, be mindful of insects, mosquitoes, snakes, and ants, as well as the risk of heatstroke. Whether you're a photography enthusiast or a nature lover, Seventy-Seven Heights is considered a highly recommended travel destination among all attractions, truly one in a million. Visitors are advised to wear long-sleeved clothing and ideally avoid applying perfume, as venomous snakes, poisonous bees, and macaques are present in the area. Please do not leave the designated path and comply with wildlife conservation laws. Due to the age of the military structures, the public should not lean heavily on railings to prevent accidents. Entry is also prohibited during unfavorable weather conditions.
