For trail opening information, please refer to the Hualien Branch of the Forestry and Nature Conservation Agency, Ministry of Agriculture [Latest News]. The Liyu Mountain Trail meanders crisscross through the mountains and forests. After renovation, most of its paths consist of stone steps, wooden stairs, or gentle slopes. The distances vary, offering easy, flat forest paths as well as steep stairs leading directly to the summit, allowing hikers to choose a suitable route based on their time and physical ability. In the morning, walking slowly along the steps, a fragrant forest scent emanates from the trees, crisp and pleasant bird songs drift from afar, and the sparkling Liyu Lake subtly appears through the leaves and branches. In the afternoon, mist swirls around the mountains, and cool breezes blow, making one forget all worries. Liyu Mountain summit, at an elevation of 601 meters, is located near the junction of the scenic overlook trail and the birdwatching trail. It is listed among Taiwan's 'Little Hundred Peaks' and features a Class 3 triangulation station. The observation deck at the summit offers excellent views, with the tranquil rural landscapes of the rift valley, the undulating ridges of the Coastal Mountain Range, and even the vast, endless Pacific Ocean all visible. Engaging with nature: Liyu Mountain's forest composition includes low-altitude broadleaf forests and artificial forests. The rich and diverse understory vegetation nurtures many small animals. Tall tree ferns exhibit graceful forms, their symmetrical pinnate leaves possessing a regular beauty. Vines climbing up tree trunks add a touch of interest to the hiking journey. Surrounded by mountains, the quiet and pristine Liyu Mountain is a birdwatcher's paradise. The tiny figures of species like the Taiwan Barbet, Black-naped Monarch, Streak-breasted Scimitar Babbler, Swinhoe's White-eye, Taiwan Wren-Babbler, and Rufous-capped Babbler can often be seen flitting and hopping among the branches. When there's ample sunlight, raptors like the Crested Serpent Eagle or Crested Goshawk are frequently seen circling and rising on thermal currents, gracefully spreading their wings and soaring. Liyu Lake and the surrounding mountainous areas have sufficient humidity, providing an excellent habitat for fireflies. Various species of fireflies appear in rotation throughout all four seasons, dotting the night with their glowing lights. In addition, the area is rich in other animals such as frogs, butterflies, lizards, and snakes. Monkey troops also occasionally make an appearance. When walking on the trail, if you encounter snakes or monkeys, do not panic. Simply walk around them quietly. Remember not to disturb these mountain spirits, respect the natural ecosystem, and enjoy the novelty of unexpected encounters with various wild animals.
