Mataan Bicycle Trail

The Mataan community is Hualien's largest inland wetland and the traditional home of the Amis people. Its unique blend of indigenous culture and rich aquatic ecosystem earned it a spot among the "Top Ten Classic Rural Villages" nationwide in 2007. The bicycle path begins across from the Guangfu Sugar Factory, following the Fudeng Stream, which originates from the Central Mountain Range. Along the way, cyclists will pass by lotus fields irrigated by clean spring water, observe wetland springs, and encounter diverse aquatic flora and fauna. Visitors can purchase local specialties like lotus products and Mataan beans at the agricultural product sales center. The Wetland Ecology Museum offers insights into the area's distinct ecosystem, and at the eco-fishing pond, one can experience the indigenous traditional fishing technique known as "Palakaw." The path continues through the Dragonfly Restoration Area and over Egret Bridge, eventually circling back to the Guangfu Sugar Factory. The entire route is thoughtfully designed, featuring numerous wooden paths and pavilions built with traditional craftsmanship, reflecting a strong commitment to ecological conservation. This journey offers an environmentally friendly cycling experience. Total length: approximately 8 kilometers. Path condition: wooden boardwalks.
