Green Island is an island formed by volcanic activity. Scholars hypothesize that an ancient explosive volcanic crater once existed on its eastern coast. In addition to remnants of a volcanic neck, the crater walls, due to varying degrees of resistance to weathering, also formed a series of surrounding geological landscapes. From the Xiaochangcheng (Little Great Wall) trail at Haishenping (Sea Cucumber Bay), one can spot a geological formation in the sea that strongly resembles a crouching pug. This formation is known as 'Pug Rock' and, together with the nearby Sleeping Beauty Rock, is collectively referred to as 'Sleeping Beauty and the Pug.'
