Trains from Hualien to Taitung used to take 8 hours. Therefore, the earliest Chishang bentos were created for train passengers to enjoy during their long journeys. Initially, the bentos were wrapped in bamboo leaves and contained four triangular rice balls with dried meat and pickled plums. Later, they gradually evolved into wooden box packaging, featuring rice cooked with Chishang rice, paired with ingredients such as bu rou (fried pork), roasted pork, traditionally made pickles, and shrimp caught from Dapo Pond. As times changed, Chishang Bento maintained strict quality control over its ingredients, creating richer and more diverse dishes. With modern management, it breathes new life into this long-established brand.
