Maiden Rock (Torch Rock)

Also known as Couple Rock, its unique hollow shape has inspired the endless imagination of the Tao (Yami) people. In the past, the Tao (Yami) people called Maiden Rock 'ji-mavonot' (meaning 'bundle of reeds') because, when viewed from the open sea, it resembles a bundle of reeds standing upright on the coast. Another name is 'ji-mitazizik' (meaning 'leaning'), originating from a legend of the local Iraraley (Langdao) tribe. According to the legend, Maiden Rock was a filial child who tried to prevent her parents from arguing by standing between them. Helplessly unable to stop their quarrels, she stood by the island's circumferential road, shedding silent tears, and eventually transformed into a rock that could never be called back. This place was also where early Iraraley (Langdao) tribe residents would temporarily store dry firewood when descending to the beach, to prevent it from getting wet in the rain.
