Green Island Sika Deer Ecological Park

Green Island, originally not home to sika deer, saw their introduction for breeding and antler velvet harvesting in the 1960s. This eventually developed into a unique deer farming industry on the island. Between 1977 and 1983, its peak period, the island boasted over 2,000 sika deer. However, following a boom in deer farming on Taiwan's main island and a sharp drop in antler velvet prices, raising deer became economically unviable. Consequently, deer farmers released their farmed sika deer into the wild. Sika deer, which had been extinct in the wild on Taiwan's main island for many years, thus found a new lease on life in the mountains and forests of Green Island.
