Green Island Lighthouse

In December 1937, the S.S. President Hoover, then considered the world's largest luxury liner, ran aground off Gongguan (Chaikou) on Green Island due to dense fog while en route from Keelung to the Philippines. The following morning, Green Island residents launched sampans to rescue the crew and passengers, bringing them ashore and sheltering them in their homes, an act that earned widespread international praise. To show gratitude for the residents' courageous and selfless actions, the U.S. authorities donated funds through the Red Cross to build the Green Island Lighthouse. During World War II, the lighthouse was destroyed by air raids. The lighthouse seen today was rebuilt by the Republic of China government in 1948.
