Amis Folk Culture Center

The Amis Folk Culture Center was completed in November 1995. It was constructed based on the hand-drawn plans of Suketaro Chichiiwa, a Japanese architectural educator from the Japanese colonial period, modeling the residence of a priest from the Tabalong community in Hualien County. The wood carvings on its beams and columns display totems unique to the Tabalong sub-lineage of the Amis people. The Amis are the primary ethnic group in Chenggong Township, having moved here and formed settlements as early as the Qing Dynasty. The old name of Chenggong Township, "Malalau," originated from the Amis language.
