Sandimen Art Village

Sandimen Village is the political and economic center of Sandimen Township in Pingtung County. The streetscape features an orderly grid pattern, with buildings constructed along the slopes, appearing as gently rising, tiered arrangements from a distance, creating a unique tribal landscape. Sandimen Village is renowned for its handicraft creations; the artistic quality of its various crafts is exceptionally high. This not only boosts local tourism development but also carries the mission of cultural preservation. Visiting Sandimen Art Village, one can easily find numerous craft halls and museums showcasing pottery, stone carvings, wood carvings, glass beads, and indigenous-style clothing. While each craft hall presents a unique artistic flavor, they all fully demonstrate the creative energy of the Paiwan and Rukai tribes, imbuing each craft piece with distinctive artistic life. Strolling through Sandimen, permeated with a rich artistic atmosphere, feels like being in an art treasure trove filled with strong indigenous charm. In earlier times, the Paiwan and Rukai people used glass beads as family heirlooms or betrothal gifts, symbolizing power and noble status. Different glass beads also carry meanings such as nobility, protection, courage, beloved, harvest, and longing. Thus, the colorful and captivating glass beads are very popular crafts, often designed into accessories like bracelets, necklaces, and phone charms; their simple designs are quite beautiful. The village also offers DIY glass bead courses, allowing visitors to experience the joy of making their own glass beads. Many Paiwan and Rukai artists engage in art creation primarily through individual studios. For example, the renowned carving master Sakuliu, proficient in carving, painting, and pottery, draws most of his creative themes from daily life or mythological stories, with intricate carving being his hallmark. Visiting an artist's studio offers a chance to be deeply moved by their dedicated creative spirit. Beyond visiting the art village, you can also stop by Koushe Village. This village boasts a pristine and tranquil environment, with particularly stunning and captivating valley views, where rock formations, boulders, and streams are the main reasons visitors linger. While walking along the old mountain road, you can admire a beautifully shaped suspension bridge from a distance. Not far from the road, there's a water intake channel built during the Japanese colonial era, a very precious historical relic. Within the grid-patterned alleys of Sandimen Village, there's a collective creation by all villagers: a lifestyle created with modern craftsmanship, blending traditional thought, showcased on a 453-meter long pathway. This pathway features 1212 beautiful ceramic tiles jointly painted and laid by the elders and children of the tribe.
