Qiu Family's Henan Hall Loyal Residence

The Qiu Family's Henan Hall Loyal Residence is located at the northwest corner of Jhongjheng Junior High School in Pingtung County, situated in a Hakka compound (siheyuan) that was formerly part of Ahou County. It is located in Changxing, an area frequently visited by Hakka, Hoklo, and indigenous peoples, and is an important area within the "Front Stack" (Qian Dui) of the Hakka Liudui (Six Stacks). Originally, the ancestors of the Qiu family resided in Changxing Village. In Meiji 28 (1895 AD), after the "Yacheng Battle," the final battle of the Liudui's resistance against Japan, descendants of Qiu Feng-yang moved to Tianliao Village in the eastern district of Ahou. The eldest brother, Qiu Yuan-kui, and the second son, Qiu Yuan-shou, each built a Hakka compound. These two compounds were adjacent, located on the north and south sides respectively. The building constructed by Qiu Yuan-shou is the current Henan Hall Loyal Residence. In Meiji 33 (1900 AD), Ako Taiwan Sugar Manufacturing Co., Ltd. was established. Qiu Yuan-shou and his son, Qiu Qiu-shun, accumulated wealth by cooperating with the sugar factory company in the sugar manufacturing business. Consequently, in Taisho 4 (1915 AD), they rebuilt their original old residence, spending three years to create the exquisite grand compound known as "Henan Hall Loyal Residence." In the 80th year of the Republic (1991 AD), due to the expansion of Jhongjheng Junior High School's campus in Pingtung City, the two ancestral homes of the Qiu family had their land ownership donated to the school. Among them, Qiu Yuan-kui's residence was immediately demolished to become a school sports field. The other building, Qiu Yuan-shou's residence, was actively advocated for preservation by local cultural and artistic figures, and was renovated into the "Local Art Museum," officially opening on April 21, the 89th year of the Republic (2000 AD). In the 110th year of the Republic (2021 AD), recognizing that the name "Local Art Museum" might lead to public confusion regarding its theme, and considering that the original name better reflects its mission to preserve Hakka cultural heritage and its significance for cultural education, the "Pingtung County Local Art Museum" was renamed back to its original name, "Qiu Family's Henan Hall Loyal Residence." The Qiu Family's Henan Hall Loyal Residence is currently the most completely preserved Hakka historical building within Pingtung City. It regularly provides venues for local exhibitions, serves as a community cultural and artistic center or a parent-child teaching and research center, and also offers a local education site for elementary and junior high school students. The hall contains rich and significant Hakka culture, featuring an abundance of "wood carvings," "Koji pottery," "cut-and-paste ceramics," "clay sculptures," and "paintings" as decorative arts, which further enhance the traditional historical architectural atmosphere of the hall.
