The Pingtung Art Museum (formerly the old district office building) faces west from the east. It belongs to the first generation of post-war county-administered city official buildings and holds local historical significance. It was designed and supervised by Mr. Lin Rong-zhang, a technician from the district office at the time. The building is 52m long, 20m wide, covering an area of approximately 980㎡. It was completed and opened in October 1953, and the city office moved to its new administrative building in July 2005. The original site was borrowed by the County Cultural Affairs Bureau for free for five years and was renovated into an art museum with subsidies from the Council for Cultural Affairs. Earlier this year, due to the expiration of the agreement, the district office took back self-management as per the contract. The county government removed some internal facilities and all lighting fixtures. Currently, the district office is undergoing internal renovations, hoping that its reopening will be a pleasant surprise for citizens. The space of the Pingtung Art Museum showcases spatial characteristics of early modern architecture. The facade features rows of slender windows, with an added eaves only at the entrance to emphasize its role. The interior space, apart from the tall columns, has no superfluous partitions. Coupled with the light introduced by the rows of windows, the entire space presents a superior sense of openness. Currently, the Pingtung Art Museum is empty inside. The ceiling structure of the building, made entirely of fir wood beams, is fully visible. Combined with the round or square window lattices and the Western-style leaf-shaped column capitals, the changing interplay of light and shadow further enhances the unique beauty of the art museum's architecture.
