Beigang Cattle Market

As Taiwan has transitioned into an industrial and commercial society, mechanized cultivators and motorized carts have gradually replaced working oxen. The social value of cattle is no longer what it once was, and the importance of cattle markets and cattle dealers has consequently diminished. The Beigang Cattle Market is one of only two remaining cattle markets in Taiwan. It is located along the Beigang River, west of the Beigang Bridge. It opens early in the morning on the 3rd, 6th, and 9th days of each ten-day period of the Gregorian calendar and closes at noon. In the past, the highest trading volume reached over a thousand head of cattle. Although actual cattle trading is now rare, it remains a popular large market for elderly farmers and tourists in the Yunlin-Chiayi Plain, selling daily necessities, snacks, cultural and artistic items, second-hand electrical tools, and more.
